That doesn't look like fun. Good on you for getting out there in it, though.

I don't own a car and I never seem to be able to get myself on the bus schedule, so I either walk or ride.  Not a long commute - just 7 miles round trip, but walking seems to take forever... so, I ride. 140+ commuting miles thus far for January.

Well done, dragonfly.

I looked at the internet weather experts, and they all said it was in the 20's this morning. Got on the bike, and was immediately cold. Tucked in the sleeves, pulled up the balaclava, and went on about it, but still was surprised I was feeling the cold as I was. Looked at the Garmin a little later, and it said 14. Made sense then.

I find a few thin layers works for me. My standard commuting kit in winter is a rain coat and rain pants. Usually it is just over my every day work clothes. Yesterday I added a thermal layer under my work shirt and a pair of long underwear under my trousers. On the feet yesterday I had liner socks, plastic bags (produce bags from my last shopping trip), and another pair of liners. I always wear a hat under the helmet and clear glasses, but yesterday I added nordic racing ear muffs and a neck gator to the get up. A variety of glove choices keep my hands functional. Yesterday morning (-5 when I left the house) I was chilly for the first mile or two and then warmed into the ride. I have learned how to dress for "comfortable" riding down to around -15 (thank you 5 years of commuting through the winter in MT). Below that I end up like the Michelin Man and lose the movement necessary to work a bike.

I'm 37 and have never owned a car. I choose where in a community I live very carefully with regards to proximity to work and groceries. I commute on a regular road frame converted to a fixed gear, with a gear ratio chosen for what works with regards to chain length, so I also have to make sure I can manage the terrain with my gear.  It has worked thus far. :-)

Dragonfly, that's awesome. It's impossible for me, right this minute, but I'd love to get to a place where I can live car free. [edit] I just noticed where you live...that's borderline remarkable, biking year round in that area. My mothers side of the family is from Ithaca, I know the area a bit.

Actually, I may find out if it's possible...the transmission in my car is getting closer and closer to aborting itself...when that happens, I'm on the bike.

I would have loved to have been able to commute today. Legs are feeling a little bit better, but I know they're not totally healed, so I'm not risking it.

Rog, necessity definitely breeds creativity... Though injuries heal better and faster when you give them time.

Ithaca is not as 'easy' to commute in as Bozeman MT was, but having grown up here in Ithaca, I came back with a plan of sorts. I work on Cornell's campus and specifically looked for a place to live on East Hill or north or campus.

I do have several routes "mapped out" and I choose my path for the day depending on road conditions and traffic and how much I want to beat myself up with my one gear on the hills. I also chose a place that was close - just 3.5 miles each way... so even if I miss on the clothing I am never out _that_ long...

fixed gear + really short horizontal drop outs + taking out the broken link = chain that is too short to work...

 :/

so I used me feet for walkin'

Still haven't managed to get the new chain so I've been commuting on the cx bike.

It has been cold in the mornings, but great on the commute home. It's a good thing I eat all my lunch, so I have room in my trunk bag for the extra layers I don't need in the afternoon.

This morning was absolutely gorgeous. May have some rain/snow this afternoon, but the ride this morning is worth a little payback this afternoon.

Ice and meeting earlier this week, so for the first 3 days, there was no commute for me. I can see how one could easily be lulled into driving to work every day. The heater is on, the sound system is rockin', and it really is just easier to get in the truck, and drive to work.

I rode off the early ride chill that is part of my ride to work, and after about 3 minutes, I realized what I was missing when I drove.

40 degrees and clear this am. Headwinds of 20-30 forecast on the way home. I'm OK with that.

I broke out the Giant and commuted in to work, the first time since January. Took a little spill on some ice but no harm done to me or the bike. The morning leg was so nice, 26 degrees and no wind at all. I was hoping to make the afternoon leg longer but a VP scheduled a meeting at 4pm so I had to take the shorter way home. About 25mi total with a good bit of hill work. The fit on the bike isn't quite right. I'm going to have to tweak it. I may end up selling this bike for a cross bike so no big investments.
