I'm trying to decide between Avid Shorty Ultimates and TRP CX-9's for this upcoming (can't wait) season of cross. Do any of you guys have experience with either? Have a preference at all? I can't remember a single race last year where we had much, if any, mud so I'm not sure that mud clearance is a huge issue. However, this year could always be different I suppose.

That is all.

They're both expensive. I don't race cross but I own a cross bike. It has Frogglegs on it.

I also have no advice on the question you are actually answering.  I got some Tektro 720s to replace some trashier ones I had.  Pretty good stopping power.  Aren't expensive.

Braking is over rated anyways.

I agree. If I need to stop and can't I just hop off and let it ghost ride across the course. I am trying to get my cross bike as light as possible and see this as a good place to shave a few grams from my current beater brakes and also enjoy slightly better braking when necessary.
