CX Race Report Thread
« on: October 01, 2011, 09:06:45 PM »
This forum needed a CX race report thread, so I'm starting it.

Today was my first ever CX race. No real idea of what I was getting into. In the last few months I got the ol' Cannondale ST400 setup for CX. Worked on some dismounts/remounts and rode it some off road. No way prepared to race, but why not, right?

Cross the Domes in Milwaukee. Cat 4. 64 starters.

Instant legs screaming, followed by lungs screaming. Some tricky off-camber stuff today made some parts quite interesting. Tires and bike never failed me though. Dismounts and remounts went well - at least in my opinion. Had my wife and 20-month old son cheering me on (and making a cowbell ring a beautiful tune). It was nice to get a little motivation on each lap. I was cooked at the end though, but that's probably desirable.

Came in 37th out of those 64 starters. It's not great, but I'll take what I get. I had fun even though it hurt. I learned that I should probably spend some more time running and living in the pain cave on rides. The bike was flawless even though it's far from a CX rig. I was impressed by the super-cheap Ritchey Speedmax tires I had thrown on it. Traction was awesome and I passed a few people in corners at speeds that I didn't think was the smartest.

In a nutshell, what a blast! Can't wait for the next race!

Do you think we're gonna make it? / I don't know unless we try / you could sit here scared to move / or we could take them by surprise

Mud, leaves, and long grass. 6 or 7 of them on the day.

2nd CX race evar yesterday. Had a good time. Went out super hard (won the non-existent holeshot) and drilled it for the first lap (1.5mi course) or lap and a half. Sat 3rd trying to keep two guys [that were much better than me] in sight. Wore myself out and faded to finish 9th over the 40 minute race. Fail. Got beat by a few guys that I normally beat in the practice races. They are MTB guys and I am not, but I was still a little disappointed that they beat me. Did better than 27 other guys tho so it's whatever.

Practice was a practice race....but really I was just doodling along trying not to crash. I got pulled   and was taught how to dismount properly and made to practice  :P

I forgot to mention, I'm afraid of heights  :help:
I kept at it, coming down the embankment thing became less scary.  :D

Tonights practice race was another "okay ya'll go on with your racing and I'm gonna try not to crash." Someone did tell me I was doing better than last week though. I still need lots of practice.
I did work on not letting people pass me on this curvy section they had tonight, I watched a youtube on it. I think I suceeded a couple times and then a couple times I killed a flag. Okay I admit I killed many flags tonight  :D

Kill 'em Makel. On a cross course. Not on a road course.  :)

Are they using those little flags that are used for marking underground lines and stuff? If so.. be careful killing them. I've seen someone get one caught in their rear derailleur once and it really effed things up for him.

Keep practicing.
