I would not race 303/zipp/expensive wheels for CX, unless money is no object or you have access to free/cheap wheels.  Round here, the cross courses beat the snot out of your equipment, especially wheels.

thanks for that perspective. zipps have, for me, been bomber on the road (& dirt road/gravel/washboard), but i don't know the rigors of CX like you guys do, so i'm grateful for the input. what is it that beats them up so bad? are you worried about rims, spokes, or hubs...or all of the above?

i'm on the lighter side (150#) if that matters.

that mech to hydro converter looks messy, fragile & heavy.

umd--are you on the same size crux as tarmac/venge? are you using the same length/drop stem?

does the crux expert (complete bike) look like the same frame set as the crux pro? i like the coloring of the expert on the site, and it looks like the s-works is not available as a disc (and is in black and pink).

the pro is available as a frame only, but i could buy the expert as a complete bike and sell off all the parts. hm.

if the crux and pro framesets/forks are identical, i'll probably go that route. i think i def want disc.

As far as I know there are only3 different frame levels, s-works carbon, "regular" carbon (10r), and alu (E5). Pro, expert, and Comp should be all the same carbon frame just with different components.

No, I sized the CruX down. I have a 54 Venge with a 120mm -17D stem and a 52 CruX with a 130mm -17D stem.

There may be others. I hadn't looked closely at them before, I just know that there are a few that exist. Also, Colnago developed a much cleaner looking Di2 system iirc with Formula.

mind if i ask your rationale? do you use any more spacers on the crux (other than simply to get the bars in the same place due to the 125mm vs 140mm HT on the 52 v 56)?

also...thanks for that colnago/formula info. i'm intimately familiar with formula brakes on the mtb.

is ui2 for cx dumb?

The smaller size was just to keep the bars low and the bike a little shorter.

Spacers... what's a spacer?

thanks! basically would seal it for me to, then, get the expert & sell off the parts. odd that the s-works doesn't come in disc.

are the colorways pictured on the site the only ones? anyone know of other options?

IME when they first come out not all colors are available in all colors, but eventually they usually are. When the 2012s first came out the Venge frameset was only available in black, the DA in another color and the SRAM in a third. Eventually all the colors were available in the frameset and more. If you want it now those are probably your only choices.

hm....this article seems to say the s-works is available in disc (but is not listed on their site).

that color frame doesn't look too bad to me. not sure if it is the same frame as satin/red/white on the site. appears so...i like the angle from the back better, not quite as much from the side.

the problem w/ elec shifting for cross is you can't shift up a dropped chain. cross beats up all of wheels, rims are bottomed out, bearings take a beating, and with rim brakes you basically sand the brake track.
Do you think we're gonna make it? / I don't know unless we try / you could sit here scared to move / or we could take them by surprise

related note: i dropped a chain for the first time with di2 (really rough road, slightly long chain) the other day during a race...was able to shift it up.

looks like the s-works disc version is not yet available. rumor is they are waiting for a sram hydraulic offering.

If you go the Ui2 route, make sure you get a cross crank.

What's the difference besides size?
