Eggbeaters.

M520's but only to have commonality with my mtb.  Never used eggbeaters but they seem to be pretty standard in cx.

Most of the fast guys around here use spd's it seems like.

I got the shimano deore xt pedals. I was going to just get eggbeaters, but a few people advised against them, I guess they have a bad rep about breaking.

I got frustrated with eggbeaters on my MTB because of the well known problem of the pedal releasing when you strike the bottom against a rock.  But for CX that's not really an issue and the easy in/out is hard to beat.

Pam on spd cleats and pedals. Means you don't get trapped in your pedal b/c gunk builds up. And really, almost all the time it's ok to be pedaling on top of a pedal rather than clipped in. I still want to try eggbeaters though.

They seem stiff clipping in and out, will Pam help with that?

Not a whole lot. You can adjust the spring tension, off the top of my head i think there's an indexed allen head bolt on either side. You probably want to keep the tension equal on all 4 springs.
