I'm currently using Eggbeaters, but am thinking of switching to Candy's. Not sure though.

I recommend against Candies for CX.  They don't offer much noticeable platform advantage over eggbeaters, at the cost of being significantly less easy to clip in to.  IMO Candies are a good idea that is not so great in execution.

JPow runs candies.

I use eggbeaters, but I don't get my cross bike dirty. MTB shoes.

i chose candies for my CX build. i switched to eggbeaters on my MTB this year (was using time--i admit i had a screaming deal but the motivator was weight). there's something about the eggbeaters that just leaves me wanting more in terms of a platform. my MTB shoes are pretty stiff, though not as stiff as my road shoes. i also don't seem to clip into them right away, despite being able to clip in on 4 sides. my thought process was that if one misses a clip on CX there's a bigger platform in case you miss.

we'll see what happens.

It just an observation, but it seems most of the experienced people I see at practice use shimano pedals.

in what part of the country do you live? is it muddy?

from my MTB experience, shimanos tend to be the worst of shimano/time/crank bros in terms of shedding mud. not syaing they are a bad choice at all--i set my wife up with some XTR trail pedals this year as she's newer to MTB and she loves the platform...but it's not muddy here. (i know we're talking CX.)

If you use pam liberally shimano's shed mud fine. It is an extra step though.
Do you think we're gonna make it? / I don't know unless we try / you could sit here scared to move / or we could take them by surprise

Oklahoma, I've been told the mud here runs through them just fine.

I don't know about pam though  :)

Last year (my first year doing cross) I did about 10 races and none of them (including two in KC) had mud. I think mud is not super common around here in cross races.

It took most of the season for me to get the hang of getting clipped in quickly on the Egg Beaters, but so far this year I feel pretty good at it. Seem to nail it pretty quickly, or at least over the past two practice races and various drill work I've done at the house.

I've never compared weights between crank bros and the shimano pedals, but the shimanos definitely look a lot heavier (and uglier).

I use Shimano but plan on getting egg beaters at some point this year.  To me, having more ways of entry is an obvious reason to move away from the SPDs
