Is there a way to either:

a) Show only new messages in subscribed threads
b) Show all of your unread messages in all sections without checking each section

Thanks.

Yep. Click either "Show new replies to your posts" to see replies to your subscriptions, or "Show unread posts since your last visit" to see all new posts.

Where are these buttons? I've looked everywhere. Which usually means they're right in front of my nose.

Oh sorry! I forgot to add that - they're directly to the right of your avatar (and underneath "Hello shovelhd").

how would you subscribe to a thread without having to post in it?

as yet the only way to do that would be to use the "notify" button.  You can set up notification preferences in your profile.

I am not aware of a way to make a custom page of favorite threads if that is what you mean.

Notify sends emails however, so you can get bombarded.

Under modify profile, notifications, you should have this menu:
