Which Garmin to get for Red
« on: May 09, 2012, 11:23:04 AM »
Katie got her job.
She's got the entire summer off now.
Her birthday is next week.

I want to get her a garmin. She likes to run. She ocasionally bikes.  She might do another Super Sprint Tri this summer.

I'm leaning towards the 310XT so she can swim with it. I wish it had the virtual partner. She might not use it. I think it's too fat for her.  The 410 and the 610 can't be used in a pool.  I've got great pricing (under MSRP). I'd like to spend $100, I'd probably spend $200. I'll likelys pend $280.

Discuss.

i just went through this same dilemma yesterday for my wife. Mine won't need it for swimming, just walking, cycling and the HRM on the elliptical. Ended up with a FR60 bundled with everything even though I really wanted GPS. The lack of heart rate calorie calc on the 405 turned me away from it. The FR60 supports this as well as hook up to the GSC-10. Alas though, my wife is not an athlete and would never ever compete so it's perfect for her.

It gets hard when you're trying to find something for a lady. Stuff we guys would normally wear is quickly considered hideous by the female culture even though it's practical and useful. Does she have any preferences? Has she looked at them? Has she even hinted? Unfortunately there's not much in the womens line since they tend to be smaller. I know timex makes a watch but I've seen it, and it's bulky to say the least. Drop some hints and see what she thinks.

She wants a HRM, based on what she wants she needs a GPS unit. I'm not sure how much she cares about having one while she swims, but I think she'd be into it (and more motivated) if she could measure her efforts a little better.

Here's my two cents.

Like KandK, I got the bundled FR60 for my wife about two years ago from Amazon.  Looks like it's $130 there now, which I think is similar to the price I paid.  After returning the first one, which Amazon made easy, my wife has been happy with it.  She likes to run as well, bikes half the year, and doesn't swim.  It comes in a few colors, if that's Katie's thing.

My wife is running the Colfax half marathon in Denver in two weeks.  Her best friend and training buddy has a Garmin that looks a lot like the 310XT.  It probably is the 310XT.  We make fun of her because it's way too big.  On a woman's wrist, that thing is like strapping a Garmin 500 to your wrist.  My wife would never wear something that big.

I have a 310 sitting next to me, and it's way too huge for my wrist (and I wear a men's Rolex sea-dweller as a daily watch). The 910 is nice, but probably out of price range.

My local BestBuy had the FR60 on sale, BTW.

There's the new 910XT.  I don't think the pool functions have gotten incredible reviews, but it does pretend to track pool laps with an accelerometer or something.

Outside of the price you said, but she may want to chip it for it:)

If she doesn't care about pool functionality, I think the 310 has everything else.
