Half Finger gloves. How should they fit?
« on: August 10, 2011, 11:09:57 AM »
I have a question about gloves and like the post said, how should they fit. Question, should the ends be closer to the joint or closer to the palm?
Does it matter or is it all just personal preference? I unfortunately have smaller hands for a guy which creates a problem finding any glove for any reason, even at work.

here's what I mean. The first is a men's medium and the second is a women's large. Thanks, in advance.

I tried on probably 20-30 pairs of gloves before I found a pair that had the padding I wanted and fit well. For me the main things I was looking at were:

- thumb hole size: many gloves have too large a thumb hole in many gloves - you want it comfortable but not tight as that will not work over a long ride
- seam between thumb and first finger wrapped up so that when you're in position on the hoods you're not resting on that seam.
- good stitching - many gloves are not stitched all that well.
- reasonable tight across the palm so that when your hand is curved on the bar/hoods the glove is not bunching up
- tab or some way for easy glove removal
- full back (can be mesh). I hate the tan lines from open-backed gloves :)
- for me, I was looking for padding for the base of the thumb rather than on the outside of the glove.

I finally settled on a pair of pearl izumi gloves. The palm does bunch up a bi more than I'd like but the padding for me was perfect.

All great points, Omega, especially about the seams.

I also have small hands. The most critical part for me is the area between the thumb and index finger. If it's too tight, it's uncomfortable and causes numbing. If it's too loose, the material in the palm moves around and I get blisters. I'm wearing PI gloves now (I know, I know, but they were a gift, and they fit perfectly after going back to the shop where they were purchased and fitting the correct size).

Something wrong/looked down upon about pearl izumi that I missed?

A lot of people consider it department store gear, because, well, you can buy it at department stores. Quality not commensurate with the price. My gloves are not the best quality but they were worth what the gift giver paid and fit me perfectly.

Huh, I had no idea. I couldn't find the damn things anywhere near me in canada - I had to pick them up in palo alto when I was last down there.

the medium looks better.  the other one looks like it will get painful on long rides.

I agree with Grumpy. The one on the right looks too small.
