Walt Disney World half-Marathon

Wow, where can I begin with this one?

Let's see... boyfriend and I got to Orlando on Friday evening, just in time to hit the expo. It was pretty busy and there were lots of vendors. Check-in was smooth and the only negative about this one was that they were out of my t-shirt size. Still TBD if I'll get the correct size or not.

Went out to a big dinner that night and got back to the hotel much later than planned. Unfortunately, the race packet said we had to be on-site no later than 4 am  :o so after 3 hours of sleep, off we went.

Traffic getting into Epcot was hell. We finally parked and walked to the staging area. Unfortunately, runners and their spectators had to split off at this point. Grabbed a good luck kiss goodbye and off I went. It was at this point I learned I had a 20 minute walk to the start line!

Got corralled and waited around for the race to start. Donald Duck was the race marshall and  there were some awesome fireworks at the beginning and then as each corral took off. Boyfriend called just before the start to tell me where he'd be standing and I was able to see him as I got on my way.

The run was pretty wide open and smooth at first. Saw boyfriend at mile 4 where there were a lot of spectators, which was nice. He was able to take the monorail over to meet me.

After that, we ran into the Magic Kingdom. This is where it got crazy. Narrow streets were packed with runners and it was impossible to run, so I gave up and stopped to take lots of photos of the scenery and with the characters. Unless you're OTF, this would not be a race to try and PR.

It was still a blast and I couldn't help having a huge smile the whole time. Chugged along feeling great.

Got to see boyfriend again at mile 8 where I was still feeling awesome (sun finally coming up!).

From here out, there wasn't much else to look at. Empty Disney roads and giant crowds. I did run into this guy:

As we were about 1 mile out from the finish line we went through Epcot. The park had just opened and there were lots of visitors cheering us on. Ran through the center, around the giant ball, then headed back out to the finish line.

Happy to be done! Had a really great race and actually ran a good pace subtracting my stops for photos and bathroom breaks. From my watch which I kept starting and stopping, I clocked a 2:28. Official finish time was 3:08 (damn those photo stops!) Really pleased with this one as I felt strong and confident the whole time. And besides the massive crowds, I don't have anything bad to say about this race at all. It was awesome that Disney makes it easy for your spectators to follow you and cheer you on; it was great to get to see my boyfriend a few times (though at the end he was more tired than I was).

And of course, the most serious medal I've gotten so far:

Great run and looked like a lot of fun with the characters.

Good to see that you trained the manfriend about proper hand placement.
